FAQS

What is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when your muscles relax excessively during sleep, leading to the narrowing or closure of your throat. This interruption can momentarily halt your breathing dozens or even hundreds of times each night, impacting both your oxygen levels and the quality of your sleep. It’s a widespread condition, affecting approximately 54 million adults across the United States.

What are the signs & symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?

It's important to note that not everyone with OSA will experience all symptoms, and the severity can vary. If you suspect you or someone you know may have OSA, seeking medical evaluation and diagnosis is essential for proper treatment.

  • Loud Snoring: Snoring that is often loud and disruptive is a common indicator of OSA.
  • Pauses in Breathing: Breathing interruptions during sleep, often followed by gasping or choking sounds.
  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: Feeling excessively tired during the day, even after what seems like a full night's sleep.
  • Morning Headaches: Waking up with frequent headaches, which may be caused by oxygen deprivation during sleep.
  • Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, poor memory, and difficulty staying alert throughout the day.
  • Irritability: Mood changes, increased irritability, and emotional sensitivity.
  • Restless Sleep: Tossing and turning during sleep, or frequent awakenings.
  • Dry Mouth or Sore Throat: Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat can be indicative of breathing difficulties during sleep.
  • Frequent Urination at Night: Needing to use the bathroom frequently during the night.
  • Decreased Libido: Reduced interest in sexual activity or intimate relationships.
  • Reduced REM Sleep: lower amounts of REM sleep are often connected with sleep apnea, especially with sleep apnea in women.

Why is it crucial to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?

When left untreated, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can result in chronic daytime fatigue, recurring morning headaches, and challenges with memory. Untreated OSA has been directly linked to numerous accidents across transportation, workplaces, and other environments. Studies show that failing to address OSA significantly increases the risk of developing serious health issues, such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

How is snoring different from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?

Snoring occurs when relaxed throat tissues vibrate during sleep, creating the familiar sound. While it’s a common issue that often doesn’t require medical attention, it can sometimes signal underlying concerns. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), however, is a more serious condition in which breathing repeatedly pauses or becomes shallow during sleep. OSA can disrupt sleep, reduce oxygen levels, and negatively affect overall health. Although snoring can be a symptom of OSA, it’s important to note that not everyone who snores has this condition.

What is an At-Home Sleep Test (HST)?

A Home Sleep Test, also known as an at-home sleep study, is a device worn on your finger during sleep that monitors essential vital signs to help diagnose sleep apnea. This device syncs with a mobile app, allowing the data to be transmitted directly to our team of doctors for analysis. Based on the results, we will provide you with a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options.

If I have already been diagnosed, do I still need to purchase the sleep test?

If you've already been diagnosed with sleep apnea, we will need some additional information to better understand your case. The timing of your diagnosis can significantly impact your treatment plan and our ability to provide the best support.

My snoring hasn’t improved yet, is my treatment working?

While improvements in airway and breathing can often be noticed right away, it may take several weeks or months for the tissues to fully heal. During this healing period, loud snoring may persist as the "floppy" tissue causing airway obstruction requires time to tighten and for the treatment's physiological effects to take hold. Follow-up sleep testing might be needed to monitor progress.

Is the SleepZoz Device cleared by the FDA?

Absolutely! Our devices are FDA-cleared and crafted in an accredited dental laboratory. At Daybreak, we are committed to providing you with a top-quality, fully customized appliance tailored to your needs.

Is the treatment covered by insurance?

Our team will assist in verifying your insurance coverage and help you navigate your plan benefits. Although the device resembles a dental retainer, it’s crucial to recognize that Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a medically diagnosed condition that requires specialized care.

What portion of the treatment expenses will be covered by my medical insurance?

Sleep apnea mouthguards are covered by most insurance plans. Our team of insurance specialists is committed to reducing your out-of-pocket expenses. Coverage will depend on your specific medical insurance policy, clinical results, and medical history. We will provide you with details about your remaining deductible and coinsurance percentage, enabling you to make an informed decision and maximize your benefits.

Can I use the device if my sleep test doesn't show OSA but I still snore?

Certainly! The device is highly effective at reducing or even eliminating snoring. Although most medical insurance plans may not cover treatment solely for snoring, we offer convenient cash payment options and flexible financing plans to make this transformative solution accessible to you.

Will the Daybreak Device change my bite? (the way my teeth fit together)

Minor changes in how your teeth align may occur; however, these adjustments are usually subtle and often go unnoticed. To help minimize the likelihood of bite changes, you will be provided with a "Rise and Bite" device, along with recommended exercises to perform each morning.
